Who do these Procedures Apply To

When considering the application of these procedures it is important to establish the role the individual fulfils, and the nature of the allegation that are being reported.
These procedures apply to those whose work, either in a paid or voluntary capacity, which brings them into contact (directly or indirectly) with adults at risk or children, and/or a person occupying a position of trust. (Link to relevant section here). It also includes individuals who have caring responsibilities for children or adults in need of care and support and their employment/voluntary work brings them into contact with adults at risk or children.
Staff/volunteers of all relevant partner agencies, regulated settings, those working within regulated activities and registered/regulated professionals, sports group leaders, faith leaders, and other roles that bring the individual into contact with children/adults must be considered within these procedures.
- Those in paid employment, including temporary, students/trainees; casual, agency workers and those who are employed as Personal Assistants under direct payment arrangements.
- Individuals undertaking unpaid voluntary work
- Individuals who are self-employed and work directly, or are contracted to work, in the provision of services to children and adults at risk
Examples of roles/roles within organisations that may apply to these procedures:
- Education (Learning support assistants; other support staff, proprietors, Management committees of pupil referral units, kitchen staff, caretaking staff, students on placement, Teachers; Headteachers; Governors; Midday supervisors; other support staff, learners in a position of trust.)
- Social Care Staff (social workers, social care officers, social work assistants, support workers)
- Sports Coaches
- Dance, Performing Arts Teachers
- Health Staff e.g. GPs, Nurses, Occupational Therapists, Health Visitors; Hospital Porters; Health Care Assistants; etc
- Police Officers/PCSOs
- Third sector e.g. charities, communities groups, cooperatives etc
- Support Workers
- Housing officers
- Homelessness workers
- Foster Carers (self employed, defined as Position of Trust)
- Adopters (not legally defined as PoT, only if voluntary work or their work brings them into contact with children/adults at risk)
- Residential Care Workers
- Home Care Workers
- Probation
- Fire Service
- Ambulance Service
- Community Groups
- Faith Groups
- Drivers/Escorts supporting children and adults at risk Personal Assistants
- Private tutors
- Elected members (position of trust)
It is not possible to cover each and every role that should be considered within these procedures. Advice can be sought from the LADO/DOS within the local authority if it is unclear.
